Sam Barnes ’19 to Wrestle at Bucknell

Mercersburg wrestling standout Sam Barnes ’19 has committed to continue his career at Bucknell University next year.
Barnes, of Washington, Va., has a 117-53 career record and two National Prep Wrestling Championships appearances at Mercersburg and at Rappahannock County [Va.] High School, where he attended for two years before enrolling at Mercersburg as an 11th-grade student.

As a senior, the 6-foot-3-inch Barnes placed second at 170 pounds at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools State Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT) and compiled a 2-2 record at National Preps. As an 11th grader, Barnes took sixth at 160 pounds at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament, and qualified for National Preps, where he went 2-2.

He won Mercersburg’s Fred Kuhn Wrestling award as the team’s most outstanding wrestler as a senior, and has earned varsity letters in wrestling, baseball, cross country, and football during his Mercersburg career. Barnes was also an Academic-All Mid-Atlantic Prep League selection.

Barnes’ younger brother, Nick ’22, is a ninth-grade student; his mother, Susannah McNear ’91, also attended Mercersburg, as did two of his aunts (Jennifer McNear Loutzenheiser ’89 and Laura McNear Morey ’96), a great uncle (Jim Beeghly ’56), and three great-great uncles (Philip Schaff ’38, Charles Schaff ’41 and David Schaff ’43).

Barnes is the 11th student-athlete in Mercersburg’s Class of 2019 to announce a college destination; he joins Jill Ahlgren ’19 (girls’ lacrosse, Gettysburg College), Garrett Ammons ’19 (football, Gettysburg College), JJ Chou ’19 (boys’ basketball, Chapman University), Tag Curwen ’19 (boys’ swimming, Pomona College), Noah Litzinger ’19 (football, Worcester Polytechnic Institute), Tiffany McGhie ’19 (girls’ basketball, Canisius College), Sam Morgan ’19 (boys’ soccer, West Virginia University), McGee Schnarrs ’19 (football, Susquehanna University), Colby Walker ’19 (boys’ soccer, Catholic University of America), and Ryan Wiley ’19 (football, Trinity [Conn.] College).
