And She’s Off: Rebecca Lowe ’99 Covers Kentucky Derby on NBC

As studio host for NBC’s telecasts of English Premier League soccer and a veteran co-anchor of three Olympic Games for the network (in 2014, 2016, and 2018), Rebecca Lowe ’99 is no stranger to premier (or Premier) sporting events. Lowe added another big-ticket event to her resume May 4 where she co-hosted NBC’s coverage of the 145th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
“The Kentucky Derby is a rarity… two minutes of intense and unpredictable drama that unites us all; it’s sport at its absolute best,” Lowe said in a press release. “So, to be a part of such an event with such a talented NBC Sports team is incredibly exciting. Add to that the sheer size and spectacle of the day, it will be a privilege to witness one of America’s greatest annual moments.”

Lowe came to Mercersburg from her native England as an English-Speaking Union scholar; before joining NBC, she worked for the BBC and ESPN UK. She has hosted NBC’s Premier League coverage since 2013 and has covered World Cups and Women’s World Cups (including co-hosting duties for ESPN from the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany). Lowe was a co-anchor of NBC and NBC Sports Network broadcasts of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia; the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and most recently, the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Lowe is returning to Mercersburg for her 20th reunion June 6-9 along with her fellow members of the Class of 1999; as part of Reunion Weekend, she is presenting a keynote session titled “The Lowe Down” Saturday, June 8, to be moderated by Director of Athletics Rick Hendrickson.
