Mercersburg Academy inducted 23 new members into its chapter of the Cum Laude Society, which recognizes the highest level of academic achievement within the school, during its annual Cum Laude Convocation on Friday, March 22 in the Irvine Memorial Chapel. Alice Albright P ’12, ’17 was the featured speaker.
Mercersburg is one of 382 secondary schools across the country with a chapter of the Cum Laude Society, which recognizes excellence in academic work. Founded in 1906, the society is billed as the secondary-school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa.Cum Laude honorees are elected as seniors by faculty members of Mercersburg’s Cum Laude chapter.

Albright is the chief executive officer of the Global Partnership for Education, a multi-stakeholder partnership and funding platform that works to improve primary and secondary education in 65 developing countries worldwide.
From 2009 to 2013, Albright served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; prior positions include chief financial and investment officer for the GAVI Alliance and roles at the Carlyle Group, J.P. Morgan, Bankers Trust Company, and Citicorp.
She has served on Mercersburg’s Board of Regents since 2010 and chairs the Board’s Academic Policy & Campus Life Committee. Albright has also served on the Board’s Admission, College Counseling, Executive, and Nominating committees.
Albright is a graduate of Williams College and Columbia University, from which she holds a master’s degree in international affairs. She and her husband, Gregory Bowes, are the parents of two Mercersburg alumni: David Bowes ’12 and Daniel Bowes ’17.
Her mother, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, has been the featured speaker at the school’s Commencement exercises on two separate occasions; Secretary Albright has had numerous interactions with Academy students both on and off campus, including discussions with students enrolled in the school’s Quinn-Ferguson Honors Seminar.
