Mathilda Zimmerman ’19 Competes at Poetry Out Loud Regional Competition
Mathilda Zimmerman ’19 represented Mercersburg Academy at the Poetry Out Loud regional competition January 31 at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg. Poetry Out Loud is a national program that encourages high-school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.
Zimmerman, of New York City, recited three poems: "Requests for Toy Piano" by Tony Hoagland; "Break, Break, Break" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson; and "Harold & the Purple Crayon" by D. Gilson. She prepared for the competition by working with Mercersburg faculty members Laurie Mufson (director of theatre) and Michele Poacelli (director of the Writing Center).
“Mathilda performed strongly in a competitive regional field, achieving near perfect accuracy in her poem recitations,” Poacelli said.
Zimmerman is co-president of Stony Batter Players, Mercersburg’s student theatre company. She performed as June (one of the Merry Murderesses) in Stony Batter’s winter musical performance of “Chicago: High School Edition,” which ran February 8-10 in the Burgin Center for the Arts.
Poetry Out Loud is presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. For more information about the competition, visit www.poetryoutloud.com.
