Congratulations to Alexa Marsh ’21 and Shoki Nemoto ’21, who are the student winners of the Winter “Inspired by Writing” Contest. Entrants submitted work in response to “Simile Song,” an imagery-rich poem by Ellie Wilkie ’19, who is a member of this year’s senior class from Alexandria, Va.
Marsh, of Middleburg, Va., took top honors in the writing category for her piece “Nostalgia.” Nemoto of Tokyo, Japan, won in the performing arts category for his original musical composition "Road To The Submerged Islands.”
The contest (as well as other “Inspired by…” competitions held throughout the year) is sponsored by Mercersburg’s Writing Center. English faculty member Michele Poacelli serves as the Writing Center’s director.
“I love coordinating the ‘Inspired By’ contests because they give a platform for creative expression,” says Poacelli. “The contest is unique because both the prompt and the responses come from Mercersburg students, and Writing Center Student Fellows serve as the judges. The contest is truly student-centered, and truly Mercersburg, and the submissions are a reminder of the amazing and diverse talents of this community.”
