The varsity volleyball team defeated visiting McConnellsburg (PA) high school 3-2 in a five-set marathon October 17.
The Spartans won two of the first three sets, but the Storm fought back and claimed the fourth set 25-19 and then prevailed 15-13 in decisive fifth. Mercersburg filled up the stat sheet, led by Jaz Garnett '27, who had 13 kills, 11 digs, and 5 aces. Iyla Kwon '27 had 11 kills and 7 digs while Rayna Allen '27 added 10 kills and 12 digs. Alli Caretti '26 did a great job as setter, handing out 35 assists while also contributing 7 kills and 9 digs. Lena Wilke '27 led the team with 6 aces and added 10 digs while Alyssa Lee '25 chipped in 11 digs.
Head coach Amy Lyman said, "What a great match. It was a dog fight, and I am so proud of the girls' perseverance. We are learning to do hard things and it is exciting. McConnellsburg plays ridiculously good defense, but our hitters got more aggressive as the match went on and found ways to create kills. Such a good win for us!"
The victory avenges a loss to McConnellsburg two weeks earlier and brings the season record to 6-6. Next up is the MAPL tournament at Lawrenceville (NJ) on Saturday, October 26, beginning at 2 pm.
