Tough Day for Mercersburg at MAPL Boys' Golf Championship

Mercersburg Academy participated in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Boys' Golf Championship May 3, held at Cobblestone Creek Country Club (Lawrence, NJ), and had to settle for fifth place.

The teams played a format of alternate shot on the front nine and best ball on the back nine. Again this year the Blue Storm struggled with the format, and the depth of the MAPL competitors showed in the match. Good golf was played all around but Mercersburg was unable to get the three low scores required to compete in this event. Leading the way for Mercersburg was the pairing of Jason Jones '24/Daniel Zhong '23 with a 77 followed by Argyle Downes '24/Ryan Kothari '25 with a 79. To round out the scoring Ethan Xin '23/Azian Subhani '23 came in with a 86.

"It was a tough day for us" head coach Doug Smith lamented. "This format really favors deep teams and we couldn't get all the pairings just right. We will take stock of where we are this week in practice and try to learn from our struggles. The boys really wanted a good showing today and I'm disappointed we couldn't put it all together."

Mercersburg will next take on Landon School (Bethesda, MD) on Saturday, May 13 in a match at the Bear Trap Dunes Golf Course (Ocean View, DE).
