Mercersburg’s softball team gave up runs to the host Friends School of Baltimore April 19 in just two different innings. Unfortunately, the host Quakers scored seven runs in the 1st inning and then added six runs in the 4th to down the Blue Storm, 13-6, in a game played in Baltimore.
After the nightmarish start, the Storm pulled within 7-5 in the 4th when Catherine Shaffer ’22 crushed a line drive that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. Shaffer collected a double, triple, and a home run, meaning she finished just a single short of hitting for the cycle.
The Quakers responded in the bottom of the 4th with six runs to extend the margin.
Monique Garcia ’22 also homered for Mercersburg, and Cate Vickery ’22 had three hits.
“We dug ourselves a pretty big hole, but I was proud of how we battled back,” Mercersburg head coach Lauren Jacobs said. “Unfortunately, sloppy defense and walks hurt us in the two big innings, and that was a big difference in the outcome. We have three days to get ready for Peddie, who is playing really well.”
The Storm visits the Peddie Falcons for a Mid-Atlantic Prep League doubleheader Saturday, April 23, beginning at 1 p.m. in Hightstown, NJ.
