Softball Explodes for Doubleheader Sweep

Mercersburg’s softball team scored 47 runs in a two-game doubleheader sweep of Mid-Atlantic Prep League rival Hill April 9 at Spider Field, defeating the Blues 23-13 in the opener and then tallying 21 runs in the first inning of the second contest on the way to a 24-1 win.

The Blue Storm (5-4, 2-4 MAPL) actually had to rally from an 8-1 deficit in the first game, and later trailed 13-10, but came alive offensively for 11 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 21-13 lead, and added two more runs for the final margin.

"I was especially proud that they didn't hang their heads [when down 8-1] and they continued to have good at-bats and make adjustments at the plate," said Mercersburg head coach Lauren Jacobs. "We've been working a lot on working the count and being selective, and that really paid off as they were extremely patient at the plate. Everyone in the lineup recorded at least one hit and everyone scored at least two runs."

Monique Garcia ’22 was the winning pitcher and also went 4-for-6 at the plate with four RBI. Ava Guzic ’25 drove in two runs and Izzy Jones ’22 scored four times.

The outcome of the second game wasn't in doubt for long, as the Storm plated 21 runs before Hill had a chance to bat. Winning pitcher Kayleigh Linn ’22 faced just 11 hitters in three innings, striking out five. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI.

Mercersburg visits the Maryland School for the Deaf Tuesday, April 12, for a 4:15 p.m. game in Frederick, MD.
