Mercersburg's head diving coach Frank Betkowski wrote the following summary of the team's trip to the Hill Invitational.
On Saturday, February 10, Luntu Radebe ’25 bested more than a dozen competitors to win the girls' division of the 2024 Hill Diving Invitational hosted by the Hill School in Pottstown PA. Earning 387.90 points, Radebe outpaced the next nearest competitor by more than 40 points. Teammate Alex Van Ess ’24 was the runner-up in the boys' division with 339.65 points. Radebe and Van Ess switched places from just a week ago, when Van Ess won the MAPL boys' diving championship while Radebe placed second among girls'. They were joined by newcomers Bruce Joyner ’25 and Ali Young ’26, who were diving in their first-ever championship format (11-dive) meet. Joyner placed fifth (243.90 points) and Young finished thirteenth (208.20 points).
Coach Betkowski said, “With Easterns just a week away, Luntu and Alex are peaking at just the right time.” Betkowski continued, “I am equally proud of Bruce and Ali. For any diver, competing in your first 11-dive meet is a great accomplishment—and these two are new to the sport. They began diving just this season.”
The Hill Invitational is the traditional diving warm-up for the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships (“Easterns”), which will be held on February 16 and 17 at Franklin & Marshall College (swimming) and Germantown Academy (diving).
