Mercersburg Academy will host its inaugural College Fair on Thursday, October 17, at 7 p.m. in the Edwards Room of Keil Hall. The event is open to all high school students in the surrounding area. It will include colleges and universities from across the nation, such as Drexel University, University of Rochester, Trinity University, University of Pittsburgh, and Rhodes College. See the full list of schools.
“The biggest reason we decided to take on a fall college fair at this very busy time of the year is to provide access, not only for our students at Mercersburg Academy but also for students from a rural community that may not have the opportunity to attend a college fair,” said Vicki Thompson, Director of College Counseling at Mercersburg Academy. “Mercersburg Academy is working hard to engage with the community to provide support, and this is an initiative we decided would be good for the students in this area."
Though the fair is intended to benefit a range of community members, Thompson spoke further about its impact on our school community, particularly the 9th- and 10th-graders, saying, “The opportunity to interact with representatives from different colleges and universities is important in a space that they’re familiar with and comfortable in. We’re providing practice for when it becomes much more real to younger students and an opportunity for our 11th graders and seniors to get more information about the places they’re considering applying to.”
On the topic of Mercersburg Academy’s upperclassmen, Thompson also noted the opportunity for “seniors who are applying to some of the schools that are coming,” saying the fair offers “another touch point for them to ask their questions of someone from the college about the application or their program” and “demonstrate an interest in the school."
This event offers unique opportunities for individuals at every stage of their academic journey. Thompson envisions the fair seamlessly integrating into a Mercersburg student’s educational path, describing this opportunity as “a no-stress way to dip your toe in the water of a college search.”
