Last Second Goal Lifts Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Past Peddie

Zareena Sorho '23 scored a diving goal with three seconds left in overtime as Mercersburg defeated visiting Peddie 11-10 in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League girls' varsity lacrosse game April 22.

The game started early in an attempt to avoid expected rainy weather, and Mercersburg controlled possession and led for most of the first half before a late rally put the Falcons on top 5-4 at the break. Peddie was ahead 6-4 six minutes into the second half when the first weather delay hit. After a half hour the teams returned to the field and played another five minutes before thunder once again sent everyone scrambling, with the Falcons still holding a two-goal lead (7-5).  When play resumed after the second delay, there was 14:20 to play, and both teams came out firing to make those minutes count. The Blue Storm battled all the way back, and Hailey Chepren '23 scored to tie it at 10 and force overtime. After missing several good scoring chances in the three-minute overtime, Sorho barreled toward the Peddie net from the left side and fired off a low sidearm shot to win it.

Chepren led the Storm with four goals (all in the second half) and an assist while Zareena finished with three goals and an assist. Sister Zareen Sorho '23 scored two goals and had one assist, and dominated in the draw circle, winning seven draws on her own and sending seven more to her teammates. Linley Hill '23 scored one goal and handed out three assists and Nora Smith had the other Blue Storm score. Head coach Kristin Ahlgren noted that "The defensive unit of Cameron Dotson '23, Page Starkey '24, Rachel Hull '23, and Caroline Wilkinson '23 played strong and caused many turnovers with their pressure, and goalie Scarlett McArthur had six saves."

Mercersburg's winning streak is now at six, and the team has an overall record of 8-3 (1-1 MAPL). Next up is a home game against University High School (Morgantown, WV) on Tuesday, April 25 at 4:30 pm.
