Germany Johnson '25 scored three touchdown three different ways, but Coventry Christian School (Pottstown, PA) rallied to defeat host Mercersburg 38-24 in a varsity football game September 28.
Johnson scored the game's first points on a 39-yard punt return the first time Mercersburg touched the ball, but that was all the scoring until just before halftime. The Eagles tied it up with two minutes to play in the second quarter, but Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to immediately regain the lead.
Coventry Christian moved ahead as the third quarter expired, but the Storm responded once again with a 73-yard pass and run from quarterback Kenneth Austin '27 to Johnson for his third trip to the end zone. Unfortunately, the Eagles scored twice in the final minutes to pull out the win.
Frank Bonsal '25 also had a big game for Mercersburg as he was the primary ball carrier, converted two two-point conversions on the ground, and came up with multiple tackles for loss on the defensive side.
Mercersburg is now 1-2 and will travel to Frederick, MD on Friday, October 4 to take on Maryland School for the Deaf. Game time Friday is 7 pm.
