It was a mixed result for the Mercersburg volleyball squads in Hagerstown September 28 as the varsity team fell to St. Maria Goretti 3-2 but the JV's picked up a 2-0 win.
The JV team opened the competition by downing the Gaels in straight sets by scores of 25-7 and 25-22. Shine Jo '25 served up 10 aces with Stevie Keck '26 adding 5. Mary Grady '25 and Lily Crounse '25 led the team with 3 kills each.
In the varsity match, the Blue Storm jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hang on in the first set, losing 26-24. Things clicked into place in sets two and three (25-17 and 25-18 wins), but then Goretti turned it around again and took the final two sets 25-13 and 15-12.
Priscilla Lee '23 led the team with 22 assists and 9 aces while Rachel Hull '23 led in kills and digs (10 of each). Head coach Amy Lyman commented, "We struggled with passing and defense" [tonight], and played some "Jekyll and Hyde Volleyball". Lyman added,"Serving was strong at an 88% for the team and 22 aces, but hitting was inconsistent."
Mercersburg (1-5) will try to get back into the win column on Thursday, September 29th when it hosts Broadfording Christian Academy (Hagerstown, MD) at 5 p.m.
