Golf Team Takes Fifth in State Championship

Mercersburg finished fifth in a very strong field at the PAISAA Golf State Championship held at Brookside Country Club (Pottstown, PA) October 31.

Only 8 strokes separated first place from sixth place with Haverford and Germantown Academy tying for the top spot with a team score of 228. The Blue Storm's 235 total (taking the top three scores of the four competitors for each team) put them in fifth place, one shot behind Episcopal Academy and one shot ahead of Malvern Prep.

Argyle Downes '24, who has been in amazing form all year, was excellent again with a round that featured six birdies, placing him second in the championship with a 71. Co-Captains Daniel Zhong '23 and Ethan Xin '23 both carded very respectable 82's for the other two scores.  Jason Jones '24 finished with an 83 to just miss out on the scoring.

"This was a fine effort by all but to achieve our goal at the championship all the chips had to fall right into place," Coach Smith commented. "To a man we left strokes on the course and that came back to hurt. Argyle once again was absolutely electric and I feel for him that he fell just short [one shot away from low individual score], but even so that was an excellent round under pressure. This concludes the fall portion of the season and we will focus our energy for the second half in the spring. I know this group will be ready to go come March."
