Golf Team Takes Down Hill 5-3 in Match Play

The Blue Storm golfers hosted Hill in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League showdown on a truly idyllic Saturday afternoon at Chambersburg Country Club. The teams competed in a rare 8 vs. 8 match play event that has become a tradition between the two schools, and Mercersburg came out on top by a score of 5-3.

Head coach Doug Smith reports that, "Mercersburg's top four were in tremendous form. Argyle Downes '24 struggled on the front nine but on the back 9 he won 5 consecutive holes to take control of his match and win by the score of 4 and 3. Jason Jones '24 had less of an up and down round and commanded his match from the start posting an impressive 6 and 5 victory. Not to be outdone, Co-captains Ethan Xin '23 and Daniel Zhong '23 closed their matches out with 5 and 4 wins. Xin continued his steady ball striking to maintain control of his match from the start while Zhong drove the ball tremendously on the day to stay ahead of his opponent. The winning point was secured by Chris Labolle '23 who won his match 1 up after closing it out on the 18 hole and bringing home the team victory."

Coach Smith went on to say that, "This was a fun day of golf for the team. Match play presents its own challenge and we always relish the opportunity. The spirits were high and the top of the squad really came to play. Each of them commanded their matches and found the form needed. This is a nice way to begin our championship week but we have a lot of golf ahead of us. I think the team is rounding into form."

Mercersburg hosts local rivals St. Maria Goretti and St. James on Wednesday, October 26 at 3:30 p.m.
