Mercersburg’s girls’ cross country team took third place in the team standings at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championships, which were hosted October 27 by The Hill School in Pottstown, PA.
Greta Lawler ’23 placed seventh to earn All-MAPL honors (21:44.8). Anne Sehon ’25 took 11th place in her first MAPL meet (21:58.8). Erika Sowah ’24 was one of three Mercersburg runners to record lifetime PRs; she placed 16th (23:25.5).
Other Mercersburg finishers were Maddie Schermerhorn ’22 (20th, 23:51.2), Linley Hill ’23 (25:02.5, PR), Clare Ip ’23 (25:39.2, PR), and Leah Willis (31st, 26:06.5).
“I am so proud of the girls on my team for how hard they worked this fall running, lifting and cross training,” said Mercersburg head coach Betsy Cunningham. “Cross country is known for having a high injury rate. Granted, most are relatively small injuries, but it is a big deal to be able to put an entire roster on the starting line of the championship meet. Usually, we have several out with small injuries. However, this year was special with all of the kids ready to go for MAPLs.
“This group was interesting—because we had lost so many seniors, it felt like a growth year; however, the team never allowed that to be their mindset. They ran hard every day and I am extremely proud of their commitment to hard work and good sportsmanship.”
