Mercersburg defeated Georgetown Day School 4-3 in a girls' varsity tennis match played on the campus of George Washington University in Washington, DC October 9.
The Storm went into the event with a major disadvantage as three of its top five players were unable to make the trip. But several people stepped up and played well at higher spots on the ladder to pull out the team victory. Georgetown took two of the three doubles matches, but Maddie Gray '26 and Amy Wang '27 prevailed 6-3 at #1 doubles. Ava Marathe '26 had a decisive 6-2 win at #3 singles and Bella Tai '25 outlasted her opponent 7-5 at #4 singles, but the match of the day was at #2 singles. Ava Shanefelter '26 and her GDS counterpart battled back and forth the whole way, with neither player ever leading by more than one game. They ended up tied at 6-6, and the tiebreaker was just as tight and was also tied at 6-6 until Ava came through to win the final two points and take the tiebreaker 8-6. Shanefelter's match was the last to finish and her 7-6 (8-6) win clinched it for Mercersburg.
Having now won four of their last five matches, Mercersburg (5-3 overall, 2-2 MAPL) has a big MAPL match at Hill School (Pottstown, PA) on Saturday, October 12 at 1:30 pm.
