Mercersburg and Flint Hill School (Oakton, VA) finished in a 1-1 tie in a girls' varsity soccer game played on the Upper Field September 16.
The teams were fairly evenly matched, though the Blue Storm did have an edge in time of possession and scoring chances in the first half, which ended with neither team able to find the net.
In the second half, Mercersburg continued to apply the pressure and eventually Nora Smith '24 opened the scoring on a 25-yard free kick with a brilliant shot into the left corner with about 18 minutes left. The Huskies picked up their tempo once they were down a goal and created some solid opportunities. An unfortunate handball in the box led to a Flint Hill penalty kick that tied the score with 11:37 to play. Both teams had chances to break the tie in the final minutes, but strong play from both goalies, including Mercersburg's Annie Mohr '26, kept the score at 1-1. Overall, the Blue Storm outshot the Huskies 16-7.
Mercersburg is now 2-1-1 on the season and plays at Jefferson high school (Shenandoah Jct., WV) on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 pm.
