Girls' Squash Second at MAPL Championships

Despite missing their top two players, the Blue Storm girls' varsity squash team pulled out a second-place finish in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Squash Tournament, hosted by Blair Academy February 11.

In the first round, Mercersburg took on Hill School for the third time this season and came away with a 5-2 win to advance to the final, despite each player having to compete one or two steps higher on the ladder than when the full team is available. Head coach Mike Sweeney commented, "Four-year seniors Greta Lawler '23 (at #2), Jamie Hyung '23 (#5) and Sam Jacobs '23 (#6) led the way. Greta's intense battle stands out as the match of the day, where she needed to go to 5 games to pull out the victory." Coach Sweeney continued, "Hisano Enomoto '25 (#4) and Mogere Nyakoe '25 (#7), two players who just learned to play the game about 14 months ago, played some of their best squash of the season, turning in 3-0 victories that contributed massively to the win."

Perennial power Lawrenceville was just too strong in the final, and took home the team title with a 6-1 win. Martina Vega '23 scored a point at #1 with a default win over her Lawrenceville opponent.

The team (13-4 overall) will travel to Shady Side Academy (Pittsburgh, PA) on Wednesday, February 15 for 4:30 pm contest.
