Football Team Drops Close One in Senior Day Finale

The Blue Storm lost its final football game of the season October 28, a hard fought 52-36 defeat at the hands of visiting Model Secondary School for the Deaf (Washington, DC).

The game started poorly for Mercersburg as the Eagles took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a quick touchdown. But Charlie Xu '26 turned around and returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to answer back. Model School took a slim 18-14 lead into halftime, which is when head coach Andy Brown honored the nine seniors playing in their final game. Sam Zhao '24, Jelly Nguyen '24, Haris Yahaya '24, Orhan Abalioglu '24, Bob Hollis '24, Theo Quibel '24, Luke Hendricks '24, Andrew Leibowitz '24, and Jordan Yuan '24 were all escorted to midfield by faculty, friends, and/or family members and thanked for their service to the program.

When the second half got under way the Blue Storm took the lead on Luke Hendricks' second rushing touchdown of the game. The Eagles responded with a quick score and carried a four point lead into the fourth quarter when bedlam unfolded as the teams combined for six touchdowns in the final 8:13 of game action. Deran Shippy ripped off a 44-yard TD run to pull Mercersburg within five with five minutes to play, but Model School scored on their own 55-yard run to quickly push the lead back to 12 points. Things seemed dire for the Storm, but then Charlie Xu scored his second kick return TD, this one covering 80 yards, to once again make it a four point spread. The Eagles marched right back down the field to score again, and then added a meaningless touchdown on the final play of the game.

Mercersburg battled back several times in this game, but fell in the end to finish the season with a record of 3-4.
