Head coach Frank Betkowski filed the following report from the season's first diving competition.
On Friday, December 6, Blue Storm divers competed in the 34th Annual Eagle Invitational at Dover Area High School in Dover, PA. In the largest Eagle Invitational to date, nearly 50 athletes took to the boards.
Luntu Radebe ’25 placed second in the senior girls division and fourth overall - including girl and boy divers - with a score of 178.85 despite a balk on one of her dives. Ali Young ’26 was runner-up in the junior girls division, and newcomer Trevi Ricks ’28 took third place among freshman girls.
Also competing for Mercersburg were Avery Liu ’25 and Solie Stenger ’25 who placed fourth and fifth respectively in the highly competitive senior girls group; rookie Eve Gunkelman ’28 who earned fourth place among freshman girls; and Oscar Su ’25, who dove in the boys senior division.
Coach Frank Betkowski said, “In the last several years, the Eagle has become our season opener; it’s really just a way to get the butterflies out before the dual and tri-meet swimming and diving season begins.”
Betkowski added, “Luntu always dives well of course. Trevi surged back after a slow start, a sign of real grit. And I am especially pleased with Avery’s performance; she’s really been grinding in practice and her hard work paid off.”
The divers will enjoy a bit of respite until their first home dual meet in the Lloyd Aquatic Center on January 18.
