Charting the Course: Mercersburg’s Role in Shaping Future Naval Officers

By Anouk Isabel Wandeler ’26

Mercersburg Academy has long played a pivotal role in preparing students for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) through its distinguished postgraduate (PG) program. The program offers students who may not receive a direct appointment to the Naval Academy a crucial “PG year,” allowing them to grow academically, athletically, and personally before entering one of the nation’s premier service academies.

Amy Mohr, a longtime faculty member involved with the Navy PG program, reflects on its history: “I started at the school in 1994, and we were already working with the Navy (and Army) and have continued since then.”

Over the decades, the program has evolved, though Mercersburg continues to provide a uniquely supportive environment for these students, both financially and academically. The PGs, Mohr explains, are “students who apply to USNA and for various reasons do not get a direct appointment, but are offered the PG route.” Thanks to Mercersburg’s location and financial aid commitment, each student receives support to make the year accessible.

According to Mike Conklin, dean of enrollment management and college counseling, the PG experience closely mirrors that of other postgraduates at Mercersburg, with one key distinction: “Most will (appropriately) opt out of the college search process, as they are essentially accepted and awaiting their appointment to the Naval Academy.”

Students also receive guidance from Captain Don Hughes, who assists them in navigating applications, deadlines, and preparation for USNA. “They get a lot of support with requirements and deadlines for reapplying to USNA during the year from the captain as well. Once at the Naval Academy, they continue to have gatherings with other students and have a local family to support them, too,” Mohr notes.

Alumni reflect on how Mercersburg prepared them for life at the Naval Academy. Jackie Scheneman ’23 shares, “My time at Mercersburg gave me an extra year to adjust to living away from my parents. Additionally, the classes I took prepared me for my plebe-year classes at the Naval Academy.”

Jinwoo Kim ’23 highlights the personal growth aspect: “Living away from home for the first time taught me a healthy independence and helped me see things from a different perspective.”

At the Naval Academy, their experiences expand in exciting and challenging ways. Scheneman recalls, “I have flown a plane, slept on a submarine, and ridden inside an Osprey 20 minutes after I got out of class. I regret nothing about my choice to come here.”

Matthew Beehler ’24 adds, “There are many days when you’re challenged both physically and mentally. It prepares you to challenge yourself and lead others.”

For those considering the program, alumni offer practical and motivational advice. Scheneman encourages, “Start as soon as possible. Once you make it through the summer, just be yourself and take advantage of everything offered at USNA.”

Beehler reminds future recruits, “Always have a why for what you’re doing. It serves as a motivating piece for yourself and can lift you instantly.”

Kim emphasizes commitment: “Choosing the Naval Academy should not be taken lightly. This place tests you in ways you probably have never experienced before. Make sure—100 percent in your heart—that this is the place you want to be.”

Mercersburg's postgraduate program prepares students for the Naval Academy and beyond, equipped with the skills, confidence, and perspective needed to succeed in life and service.
