The boys' varsity basketball team got in some preseason action by participating in the Westtown/Phelps Invitational, played at the Phelps School in Malvern, PA the weekend of November 18-20. The games were college length with two twenty-minute halves.
The Blue Storm lost a 98-96 thriller at the buzzer to the host and eventual tournament champion Phelps on Friday, November 18. Jasper Hedin '23 led Mercersburg with 34 points while Jinwoo Kim '23 had 23 and barely missed a triple double by collecting 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Bryson Brown '24 added 13 points while Josiah Wright '25 chipped in 12 and Jay Colon '25 had 8.
Mercersburg bounced back on Saturday the 19th by downing Redemption Christian Academy (Troy, NY) 67-54. The Lions jumped out to an early lead, but the Blue Storm came back to take the lead by halftime, and never trailed in the second half. Hedin (24 pts.) and Kim (20) once again led the scoring attack.
On Sunday the 20th, the Blue Storm played another barn-burner, finally falling to the Olympus Prep (Carneys Point, NJ) Post Grad team 100-98 in double overtime. Mercersburg trailed by 13 with about 10 minutes to play, but sent the game into extra time on a free throw by Josiah Wright with 3.9 seconds left. Things went back and forth through the overtime periods, but Olympus held on when a three-pointer from Wright fell just short as the final horn sounded. Kim led Mercersburg with 28 points while Hedin had 23, Brown 22, and Wright ended up with 17. Jay Colon finished with only 5 points, by he had game-altering blocks and rebounds down the stretch.
Head coach Sean Crocker said, "We had two gut-wrenching losses, but ultimately this was a very promising start to the year. We just need to focus on getting better and go from there."
Mercersburg opens the regular season on Thursday, December 1 with a 6 p.m. home contest against Broadfording Christian Academy of Hagerstown.
