Boys' V Soccer Edges Washington High School

Ken Akiyama '23 scored the winning goal with about 10 minutes to play as the boys' varsity soccer team defeated visiting Washington high school 2-1 (Charles Town, WV) October 4.

The time of possession and scoring opportunities were fairly evenly balanced in the first half, but in the final few minutes the Blue Storm had several good chances that they could not convert. The Patriots goalie made some nice saves to keep the game scoreless at intermission.

About 15 minutes into the second half, Grant Wilkinson '26 put Mercersburg on top 1-0 with a nice shot from the right side that rolled into the lower left corner of the goal. A defensive lapse in the Mercersburg end allowed Washington to tie the game up with 11 minutes to play, but Akiyama scored the game-winner less than a minute later as the Blue Storm went right down the field with the kickoff. The ball worked its way to the right wing where Kevin Malo '24 sent it across to the middle. Akiyama made a nice play to settle it, and then blasted a shot past the keeper for the game-winner.

Washington won the JV contest by the same 2-1 margin.

Mercersburg is now 2-2-3 on the year and jumps right back into action with a game at Scotland Campus on Wednesday, October 5 at 4 p.m.
