Mercersburg scored two late goals to salvage a draw against host Perkiomen School (Pennsburg, PA) in a boys' varsity soccer game September 16.
Christian Concordia '24 put Mercersburg on top 1-0 with a perfectly placed shot on an assist by Dylan Stiffler '24, but Perkiomen tied it up just before halftime. The Storm came out flat in the second half and gave up two quick goals, but Derrick Park '25 scored off a nice cross from Concordia to make it 3-2. The Panthers scored again to make it 4-2, and with twenty-five minutes to play Mercersburg was trailing by two, and was down to just ten players.
Max Strauss '25 then outmaneuvered several opponents in the box and rifled a shot past the goalie to pull Mercersburg within one with ten minutes to play. In the final minutes the Blue Storm brought Stiffler from midfield to striker and pushed everyone forward to go on the attack. Head coach Skyler Clark recounted the final sequence by saying "Stiffler received the ball (from Max Zhang '26) near the top of the 18 yard box, touched it by his defender and scored an incredibly beautiful goal… laser beam to the top corner to tie the game 4-4. The ball was reset for play, but the officials blew the final whistle just seconds later." Clark also noted that "Gabe McGuire '24 and Sam Menendez '25 did a great job defensively, breaking up several fast break opportunities."
Mercersburg is now 1-1-1 and travels to Hedgesville (WV) high school for its next game on Wednesday, September 20 at 4:30 pm.
