Boys’ V Basketball Wraps Up 2021 in Philadelphia

Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team finished the 2021 portion of the 2021–2022 season with three games in Philadelphia. In the finale of the trip December 18, the Blue Storm defeated Friends’ Central School, 60–44, in the second game of the Springside Chestnut Hill Holiday Classic.

Four Storm players scored in double figures in the victory, led by Collin Metcalf ’22, who scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half. Darren Blocker ’22 (14 points), Chris Watson ’22 (10 points), and Bryson Brown ’24 (10 points) were the team’s other offensive standouts. (Blocker was named to the All-Tournament Team.)

In the tournament opener December 17, the Storm fell to Solebury School, 61-57. Blocker led Mercersburg with 25 points; Metcalf had 17 points. The Storm trailed 25-18 at the half and 41-34 after three quarters, but couldn't come back against the Spartans. A bright spot was Mercersburg’s free throw shooting; the team went 9-for-10 from the line.

On December 16, Mercersburg visited Friends Select School for a non-tournament game. The Storm led the Falcons 36-20 at halftime and 45-35 after three periods before falling 61-55. Blocker posted a team-high 13 points while Metcalf and Watson added 12 points apiece.

Mercersburg (3–6) will now break for the holidays. The team’s opener in the new year is Friday, January 7, on the road for the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Prep League lid-lifter at the Hun School of Princeton (7:30 p.m.)
