Mercersburg defeated visiting Shipley School (Bryn Mawr, PA) 63-59 February 18 in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Cup division of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association boys' varsity basketball tournament.
It was a game of streaks that began with Shipley scoring the first eight points and then Mercersburg answering back by scoring the next eight to tie it. Things continued back and forth with the Storm holding a three point lead at halftime and the Gators then carrying a six-point edge into the fourth quarter. With five minutes left in the game Shipley had a ten point advantage (57-47), but Mercersburg went on a 10-0 run and tied the game with a traditional three point play from Josiah Wright '25 and then a three-pointer from the corner from Kellen Greene '28. The Gators hit two free throws to pull in front again, but Wright drew a foul and hit two free throws of his own with 31.6 seconds left to knot the score at 59. On the ensuing possession, Mercersburg got a steal off an inbounds pass and Wright took the ball the length of the court for a layup to put Mercersburg on top to stay. Thaddeus Lee '25 hit two foul shots in the closing seconds for the final points of the game.
Lee led Mercersburg with 22 points while Wright scored 9 of his 13 points in the fourth period. Greene added 11 points and Camden Weyforth '27 chipped in 10.
The Storm (11-13) will host the winner of the game between Kiski and Germantown Friends for the Commonwealth Cup title on Friday, February 21 at 7 pm. Before that, Mercercersburg will play its final regular season game at home against Phelps School (Malvern, PA) on Wednesday, February 19, also at 7 pm.
