Mercersburg defeated visiting Phelps School (Malvern, PA) 80-76 in a boys' varsity basketball game February 14 that featured the final home appearance for several Storm seniors.
Phelps scored the first fourteen points of the game and looked like they might run away with this one. But Mercersburg found its rhythm and steadily chipped away at the deficit and then went on a 10-1 run in the final two minutes of the second quarter to take a 41-35 lead into halftime. The third period started just like the first, with Phelps scoring the first twelve points to take a six-point lead. Once again, the Storm settled down and the game went back and forth from there, with Mercersburg making the big plays down the stretch to secure the win.
Three players scored twenty or more points for the Storm with Dom Schmidt '24 leading the way with 26 while Thaddeus Lee '25 scored 22 and Erik Oliver-Bush '24 added 20. Before the game, Coach Crocker honored the five seniors (Schmidt, Oliver-Bush, Bryson Brown '24, Sam Menendez '24, and Dylan Stiffler '24) who were appearing in their final home game.
Now 17-7 on the season, Mercersburg enters the PAISSA State Tournament as the #10 seed, and will travel to Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School for a first round game on Friday, February 16 at 6 pm.
