For the first time in school history, Mercersburg Academy is the boys' squash Mid-Atlantic Prep League champion. In fact, this is only the second time since the MAPL was formed that a school other than Lawrenceville (the host for this year's tournament) took home the title.
The top-seeded Mercersburg squad blanked Blair 7-0 in the first match of the day, then had to face off against the hosts in the championship. Mercersburg defeated the Big Red 4-3 back in December on these same courts, so Lawrenceville was hungry for revenge. Santiago Medina '24 put the Blue Storm up quickly with a 3-0 sweep of the #2 match, and Fawad Jan '24 took a 3-1 win at #4. Francis Betkowski '23 played the match of the day at #6, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to win a hard-fought battle. When Huzaifa Ibrahim '24 cruised to a 3-0 win at the #1 spot the title was secured, but Adrian Guijarro '25 came up with a strong 3-1 win at #3 to give Mercersburg a 5-2 win, improving on the 4-3 victory from December.
This is the third impressive tournament win for the Blue Storm this season after finishing in the top spot in Mercersburg's own Flanagan Invitational back in December, and also winning the Mid-Atlantic Squash Organization Tournament in January.
Mercersburg will go for the grand slam when it competes in the US Squash National Championships at the end of February, but before that, the Blue Storm host St. Andrew's (Middletown, DE) and University School (Hunting Valley, OH) for a tri-match on Saturday, February 18, beginning at 11 am.
