Boys' Golf Third at MAPL Championship

Mercersburg rallied from a slow start to take third place in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League boys' golf championship May 1, which was hosted by Blair Academy on the school's golf course.

The unique format sent out three twosomes from each school, who then played alternate shot on the front nine and best ball on the back. Here's how head coach Doug Smith described the action. "At the conclusion of the front nine, Mercersburg had dug a whole of double digits to the top three schools of Hun, Blair and Lawrenceville, and were definitely feeling the pressure of being behind.  The response was outstanding and the Storm led all the teams in the 4 ball competition with an outrageous -5 as a team on the back. Isaiah Marseille '24 and Cameron Geirasch '26 led the way and after two clutch putts for pars on 10 and 11 by Cameron they played some of the best golf in the history of the championship. They proceed to go eagle/par/birdie/birdie/birdie/birdie/birdie to shoot a staggering 28 on the back nine and tie the low round in the history of the championship with a 66 (set by the Peddie School in 2012)! Argyle Downes '24 and Ryan Kothari '25 were next in line with a very respectable 77 that just needed a couple puts to fall to really jumpstart the round.  Jason Jones '24 and Miles New '27 came in next with an 82 that had a comeback of its own with Jason pouring in a clutch eagle on the difficult 16th hole to keep hopes alive.  In the end it wasn't to be as Hun played tremendous golf and took the title.

"Really proud of the way the boys responded on the back today," coach Smith continued. "We have experienced our share of disappointing rounds this spring but today is not one of them. Since we reentered the MAPLs three years ago the alternate shot portion of this event has given us problems, as it did today, but this team dug deep and showed its strength. Isaiah and Cam's back nine today is one for the history books and I'm thrilled for them!"

Below are the final team scores.

Hun-219
Lawrenceville-220
Mercersburg-225
Blair-230
Peddie-236

The boys will compete in the Landon Beach Golf Match on Saturday, May 4 at the Bayside Resort Golf Club in Selbyville, DE.
