Mercersburg defeated host Blair Academy 9-2 and 9-8 to take both ends of a Mid-Atlantic Prep League baseball doubleheader April 2.
Matt Archibald '23 threw six no-hit innings for the game one victory and Caleb Newcomer '23 paced the offense with two doubles, a triple, and five RBI. Blair scratched out a lone single in the seventh inning after Archibald had left the game, but by that time he had struck out 11 batters and yielded just two runs, both unearned.
In game two the Blue Storm quickly fell behind 6-0, but chipped away at the lead and moved in front 8-6 with a four-run rally in the fifth. After Blair tied the game with two in the top of the sixth, Matt Archibald hit an infield single in the bottom half to score Danny Adusei-Poku '23 with what proved to be the winning run. Augie Bennett '24 had two hits and three RBI to lead the offense in game two while John Blanco '23 and Caleb Newcomer '23 handled the pitching duties. Blanco settled down after a tough start to blank the Buccaneers in innings 3 through 5 and Newcomer retired the side in order in the 7th to seal the win.
Mercersburg (3-3 overall, 2-2 MAPL) hosts Indian Creek School (Crownsville, MD) in game one of the Reisner-Gift Invitational Tournament on Friday, April 7 at 4:30 pm.
