After dropping the first game of the day to host Peddie 10-1, Mercersburg’s baseball team rallied from a 7-0 hole and then scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning for a walk-off 11-10 win during a Mid-Atlantic Prep League double header April 23 in Hightstown, NJ.
In Game 1, Peddie scored the first six runs of the game and led wire-to-wire. Gavin Williams ’24 had two hits and Tommy Tereschuk ’22 drove in the Blue Storm’s lone run of the contest.
Things didn’t start much better for Mercersburg in the second game, as Peddie scored twice in the top of the 1st and got back-to-back home runs as part of a five-run 2nd inning to build 7-0 lead. Mercersburg roared back with six runs in the 3rd. Ryan MacInnis ’23 and John Blanco ’23 drove in two runs apiece in the frame.
The Storm then took its first lead of the day with a three-run 5th inning. Blanco and Tereschuk scored on the same wild pitch, and Austin Hallberg ’22 reached on an error that scored MacInnis and Mercersburg found itself in front, 9-7. Peddie came right back in the 6th with three runs of its own to grab the lead back, 10-9, and Mercersburg headed to its last at bat needing at least a run to force extra innings and avoid a sweep.
In the bottom of the 7th, MacInnis drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by Hallberg. Aiden Lorson ’22 was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. An infield hit by Caleb Newcomer ’23 scored MacInnis with the tying run, and then Williams hit a sacrifice fly to left that plated Hallberg with the winning run for a wild 11-10 Mercersburg win.
Tereschuk was the winning pitcher in Game 2 with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Mercersburg (8-8, 4-4 MAPL) visits The Avalon School Wednesday, April 26, for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch in Wheaton, MD.
