Baseball Downs Hill in Regular Season Finale

Mercersburg defeated host Hill 9-6 in a MAPL baseball game May 14 that was technically game two of a doubleheader from way back on March 24th in Mercersburg.

In a spring season plagued by cancellations and rainy baseball, this game closed the loop from the first of many weather issues. A doubleheader was moved from Saturday the 23rd to Sunday the 24th, but on that Sunday there was only enough time to play one game (Hill took that one 8-0). On a damp and drizzly day in Pottstown, the Storm won the long delayed back end of that doubleheader thanks to a late-game rally. Hill erased a 3-1 Mercersburg lead with single runs in the third and fourth, but the Storm put six more on the board in the final two innings and held on for the victory.

Sam Menendez '24 and Gavin Williams '25 had two hits each to lead the offense with Menendez scoring three times and Williams collecting three RBI. Thomas Davenport '24 also had three RBI as Mercersburg took advantage of three hit batsmen and nine walks to put people in scoring position all day long. Williams pitched five strong innings on the mound with Brodie Collins '24 coming on to pitch the final two frames.

With the win, Mercersburg finishes the season with an overall record of 12-7, 9-3 in the MAPL (just one game behind Hun School). Now the team turns its attention to the PAISAA state tournament, which begins on Friday, May 17. The Storm are the #9 seed and will travel to Bryn Mawr, PA to take on #8 Shipley at 4 pm.
