The Blue Storm boys' golf team travelled to Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, PA for the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association state championship October 30, which featured the largest slate of golfers in the history of the tournament. Argyle Downes '24 shot an even par 72 to take the individual title and lead his team to a third place finish overall.
Downes (a co-captain of the team) began the round with a 32 on the front nine to establish an early lead. As the round wore on and the course punched back, he managed to hold the lead and secure the title. Over the past three years, Argyle has finished third, second, and now first in this tournament. Next in scoring for Mercersburg was Isaiah Marseille '24 with a 77 in a round that featured a tough stretch of four holes which highlighted his ability to battle and hold the round together. The third and final scorer for the Storm was Jason Jones '24, who had a rough day on the links, but never gave in and cobbled together an 88. The total of 237 was good enough for third place in the stacked field of Pennsylvania schools.
"I am proud of the team and the effort we put in," said head coach Doug Smith. "It would not be true if I said we weren't expecting more from today, but Malvern Prep was excellent and deserved the team title. Argyle was brilliant on the day and he was also a deserving winner of the individual championship; I am so happy for him to get this title. We are at the halfway point of the split season and will get back to work after a winter of rest."
