New Magazine Chronicles COVID-19 and the Mercersburg Experience
As our country and our world grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest issue of Mercersburg Academy magazine explores some of the ways our school community is moving forward during this unusual time. The summer 2020 edition of the magazine is on its way to mailboxes and homes around the world, and you can access the digital version here.
When Mercersburg’s spring term transformed into a virtual experience following spring break 2020, all members of the community had their own unique and varied responses. We chronicle some of those experiences in this issue: students learning to attend classes online and in all different time zones, teachers working to recreate the Harkness table in the virtual space, representatives from Mercersburg’s Admission Office sharing our campus with prospective students through a virtual Revisit Day, and everyone struggling with what we’ve lost and perhaps what we’ve gained.
The summer issue also honors individuals within the Mercersburg community—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—who are going above and beyond during this time to assist others. From a medical professional on the front lines in New York City to a faculty member who supported Mercersburg’s senior class, the Class of 2020, through the virtual spring term, and so many others, we thank everyone who has stepped up and helped out during this time.
In addition to these stories, the latest magazine includes a celebration of Mercersburg’s Class of 2020; a feature bidding farewell to Deborah Simon ’74, Mercersburg’s outgoing president of the Board of Regents; and three stories honoring retiring community members Sue Malone, Richard Rotz, and Jeff Goetz. It also explores campus life prior to COVID-19, including Irving-Marshall Week 2020; it highlights the shift Mercersburg student activities went through from planning on-campus events to virtual activities this spring; it examines a moment in Mercersburg’s history of dealing with epidemics and pandemics in the archives section; and it highlights the activities and happenings of our active and involved alumni in the ever-popular Class Notes.
