Meriwether Godsey Named Mercersburg’s Dining-Services Provider

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Mercersburg Academy announces that the school has formed an agreement with Meriwether Godsey Inc., a full-scale provider of dining services to a number of independent schools, colleges and universities, and other institutions, to oversee dining and related services for the school’s campus. The company’s on-campus services will be fully in operation when students return to campus for the start of the 2020-2021 academic year.
Based in Lynchburg, VA, Meriwether Godsey operates a range of dining services on campuses throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the U.S., including Sidwell Friends School, Oak Hill Academy, Holton-Arms School, Foxcroft School, Guilford College, Hollins University, and Sweet Briar College. The company, which was initially founded as a catering business, has been in existence for 35 years and is a 49 percent employee-owned firm.
According to Maria Kimsey, Mercersburg’s associate head of school for finance and operations, the school researched and interviewed a number of firms, and chose Meriwether Godsey for several reasons, including the quality of the services the company provides, their ability to partner with local food suppliers and purveyors, and positive reviews across the board from other institutions.
“We’ve found that smaller regional companies of all sorts—like Meriwether Godsey—are a really good fit for our community,” Kimsey says. “We like the culture of Meriwether Godsey a lot, and it’s a good business practice to always be re-examining the relationships we have with our partner companies as a school.
“The more we got to know Meriwether Godsey, the more we liked their size and structure, and we were really impressed with what their current customers said about working with them.”
The partnership will focus on continuing to add local and organic offerings and cooking meals from scratch. Meriwether Godsey representatives have already met with the school’s existing dining-hall employees to introduce them to the company and provide information about the opportunities available. “We look forward to seeing all those familiar faces very soon,” says Kimsey.
Meriwether Godsey will prepare a broad selection of offerings in the school's dining hall in Ford Hall—even as adjustments and protocols in response to the current environment will lead many (or most) of these meals at the start of the year to be consumed in different locations (such as outside when available or in smaller groups while following appropriate physical-distancing guidelines).
“We’re excited to partner with Meriwether Godsey and move forward with our goals to serve fresh, tasty, and homemade meals to our community,” Kimsey says.
