MAPL, PAISAA Announce Winter 2021 Athletic Update

Tuesday, November 24, 2020

The Mid-Atlantic Prep League and Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association have announced an update on league competitions for the winter 2020–2021 athletic seasons.

Statement from the Mid-Atlantic Prep League
Due to the rising number of cases in the COVID-19 pandemic and after much discussion prioritizing the health and well-being of our communities, the Mid-Atlantic Prep League will not be supporting a league interscholastic season for the winter of 2020–2021. MAPL member schools will have the autonomy to schedule independent contests if deemed safe for their respective institutions.
As a league, the MAPL will continue to evaluate guidelines and protocols from state governments and local health agencies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania throughout the winter. Our goal is to create dynamic athletic programming during this time, in hopes of fulfilling our educational mission and ensuring the safety of our student-athletes, coaches and communities.

Statement from the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association
Given continued fluctuations in league plans and schedules, along with the challenges, restrictions, and overall impact of COVID-19, the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association’s executive board is canceling the PAISAA Winter 2021 Championship events.

While the PAISAA will not stage official state championships, the association is supportive of schools sponsoring events through the winter season, including hosting private school invitationals that include member schools able to participate. The association will offer whatever support we can to member schools in promoting their events, with the hope of keeping our schools competing at some sort of level.

A decision regarding spring championships will be made as early as possible in 2021.

As conditions warrant and in accordance with directives from local, state, and national public-health officials, Mercersburg hopes to pursue virtual, intrasquad, or any other possible athletic competitions. Our top priority remains the safety and health of our students, employees, and the greater community of which we are a part.

All students departed the Mercersburg campus by Thursday, November 19. Students are learning virtually during the Mercersburg Intensive, which resumes December 1 and runs through December 16. Students will begin to return to campus January 9-10, 2021, for the start of the winter term.
