Maiyah Johnson ’21 to Play Basketball at NCAA DIII Level

Maiyah Johnson ’21 has announced that she will continue her basketball career next year at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. Johnson & Wales competes at the NCAA Division III level and is a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Johnson, of Woodbourne, NY, came to Mercersburg as an 11th grader. She was a two-year member of the Blue Storm varsity for Head Coach Paul Sipes, and played at Mount Vernon High School before arriving at the Academy. The 5-foot-5-inch Johnson, a shooting guard, played AAU ball for the Riverside Hawks. She was also involved in Mercersburg’s volleyball and track & field programs.

Johnson is the seventh student-athlete in Mercersburg’s Class of 2021 to announce her college athletic destination. The others are Taylor Chepren ’21 (lacrosse, Marymount University), Kiersten Donnelly ’21 (swimming, University of New Hampshire), Tom Flanagan ’21 (basketball, St. Lawrence University), Ava Hull ’21 (basketball, Swarthmore College), Liz Kendrick ’21 (lacrosse, Vassar College), and Andrew Yuen ’21 (swimming, Amherst College).

Since 2016, Mercersburg student-athletes have committed to further their athletic careers (in 21 different sports) at 76 different institutions of higher learning.
