How to Take a Photo of the Night Sky

Have you ever gazed at the night sky, breathing in the serenity of the scene, longing to capture the image so what you see will be in both your memory and your camera roll? It’s not as hard as you might think, according to one Mercersburg staff member who agreed to share his favorite astrophotography tips with us.

Three Tips to Capture the Night Sky

Taking a photo of the sky at night is not that difficult, according to Will Dupuis, the systems administrator in the school’s technology department.

Will’s interest in the night sky goes beyond casual, taking photos with his phone, a camera, and a telescope. You may not have a telescope in your backyard (like us!), but the phone in your pocket can work just as well!

Just follow Will’s three easy steps!

One: Turn on Night Mode.

Every phone is different, but most will automatically enable night mode when it is dark outside, and the flash is off. Double-check your camera controls for a small half-moon icon.

Two: Set your phone down, or prop it up!

Long exposure shots (with Night Mode) take some time, and are significantly clearer when your phone is stable on a surface rather than slightly shaking in your hand.

Three: Let the stars (or moon) do the shining!

Try to reduce the number of lights your phone may automatically focus on, such as street lights, headlights, or commercial infrastructure. The stars should be the brightest part of your shot!
