Winter 2020 Mercersburg Academy magazine cover

The winter 2020 Mercersburg Academy magazine is in mailboxes now and features three important milestones in the school’s history: 55 years of black-student integration, 50 years of coeducation, and 30 years since the founding of the Black Student Union. Eager to see the latest issue right now? Take a look at the digital version.

To honor these three important milestones, this magazine highlights our history as told through the voices of various members of the community. As part of their senior-year Springboard class, four students—Aba Sankah ’20, Audrey McGrory ’20, Caroline Kranich ’20, and Julia Borger ’20—share their search for information related to Mercersburg’s decision to integrate 55 years ago. Then, faculty member Alexandra Patterson tells of her experience watching these four young women interview Denise Dupré ’76, Mercersburg’s first female chair of the Board of Regents, about her experiences at Mercersburg shortly after the school opened its doors to women. Finally, in 1989, Mercersburg took another momentous step and created what would come to be known as the Black Student Union. Jasen Wright ’99 shares that history.

In addition to these stories, the latest magazine includes a feature on Mercersburg’s new Lloyd Aquatic Center and details about the school’s decision to move away from offering AP courses. It also highlights profiles of outstanding members of the Mercersburg Academy community in the Living the Values section; connections between current students and alumni in the Alumni Life section; Convocation, student and faculty awards, campus speakers, and more in Campus Life; and the activities and happenings of our active and involved alumni in the ever-popular Class Notes.
