King, Burkhardt Win Events at Indoor T&F Opener

In its first official competition in nearly two years, Mercersburg’s boys’ and indoor track & field teams welcomed eight other squads to the Hale Field House for the 2022 Mercersburg Indoor Invitational January 21. Hannah King ’23 (girls’ high jump) and Thomas Burkhardt ’22 (boys’ shot put) captured individual events in a successful opener for the Blue Storm.

Mercersburg girls’ highlights:
King, of Hagerstown, MD, won the high jump at 5’ 0” and placed 4th in the 55m hurdles with a time of 10.30.  Catherine Shaffer ’22 placed 5th in the 55m (8.25) and 7th in the 200m (29.99). Susan Concordia ’22 placed 3rd in the 400m in a time of 1:10.37. Anne Sehon ’25 took 4th in the 800m (2:41.59) and 5th in the mile (5:56.84). King, Shaffer, Concordia, and Sehon teamed up to place 2nd in the 4x400m relay (4:53.38). Folake Okunsanya ’22 placed 3rd in the shot put with a throw of 25’ 9.75”.

Mercersburg boys’ highlights:
The winning shot put throw by Burkhardt (of Davidsonville, MD) was measured at 38’ 3.5”, with Elijah Brown ’22 grabbing 3rd place (32’ 9.25”) in the same event. Mick Lorenger ’22 placed 3rd in the mile with a time of 4:53.03. Caleb Newcomer ’23 was 3rd in the high jump at 5’ 2”. Oscar Su ’25 was 2nd in the pole vault at 6’ 9”. Tommy Tereschuk ’22, Ken Akiyama ’23, Pablo Garza Gutierrez ’22, and Chuks Ugori ’23 placed 2nd in the 4x400m (3:54.54).

“The meet was a good opportunity for the athletes to match up with competition and respond,” said Mercersburg head coach David Grady.

The Blue Storm hosts the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association state meet next Saturday, January 29, in the Hale Field House. The action begins at noon. (Please note that at this time, spectators are not permitted for indoor track & field events on campus.)
