Goshi Kamiya ’22

In its first head-to-head match in almost two years, Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity tennis team took the doubles point from visiting Hill and then got singles victories from Luis Gomez ’21 and Jamie Talley ’23 before Goshi Kamiya ’22 clinched the team win in a tiebreaker to give the Blue Storm a dramatic 4-3 win April 17 at the Smoyer Tennis Center.

The doubles teams of Talley/Kamiya and Gomez/Dylan Gantt ’21 took care of their opponents to give the Storm an early 1—0 edge. "After a good start, Luis and Dylan found themselves down 2-5," Mercersburg head coach Eric Hicks said. "But they regrouped and rattled off six straight games to give us the doubles point. Their win turned out to be very important."

In singles, the Storm dropped the first set in four of the six matches. After Gomez’s straight set victory and after Talley came from behind in his match tiebreaker to win, the Storm needed one more singles victory to seal the victory. It came from Kamiya, who outlasted Hill’s Philippe Jin at #5 singles in a winner-take-all match tiebreaker.

"I was impressed with the fitness level of the guys and how well they competed today," Hicks said. "It came down to the wire and was fun to watch."
