Gray Joins 1,000-Point Club in Boys’ V Basketball Win
AJ Gray ’20 scored 21 points to go over the 1,000-point plateau for his high-school career in Mercersburg’s boys’ varsity basketball team’s 75-47 win over visiting Broadfording Christian Academy February 4 on Senior Night for the Blue Storm in the Plantz Courts of Nolde Gymnasium.
It was the final regular-season home game for the Storm (15-7 overall), which has won seven straight non-league games. All six seniors on the roster scored for Mercersburg: Gray, Kaylen Oweh ’20 (10 points), Patrick Di Tullio ’20 (six points), Quintin Metcalf ’20 (six points), Jack Yeager ’20 (four points), and Oba Oluwehinmi ’20 (three points).
All told, 11 different players scored for the Storm, including Chris Watson ’22, who also reached double figures with 10 points.
Mercersburg broke open a 16-16 contest with a 23-6 run in the second quarter to surge ahead to a 39-22 halftime lead. Gray, who has signed with the University of Hartford, scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half, and reached the 1,000-point mark when he converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:35 left.
"It was great to get a lot of guys in the game and to honor our seniors in front of our home crowd tonight," said Mercersburg head coach Sean Crocker. "It was an extra bonus that AJ was able to get to 1,000 points as well."
The Storm faces the Hun School of Princeton in the first round of the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Prep League Tournament Friday, February 7, at 6:45 p.m. The Hill School is hosting the six-team event in Pottstown, PA.
