Golf Tops Goretti, Stays Unbeaten
Mercersburg’s golf team continued a run of fine play with a rock-solid team effort in a win over St. Maria Goretti October 12 at Chambersburg Country Club. The Blue Storm posted a 156 team aggregate in the nine-hole match, 70 strokes ahead of the Gaels’ 226. Argyle Downes ’23 shot an even-par 36 to take medalist honors for the third consecutive match.
Downes started off with a double bogey, only to respond in true championship form with three straight birdies and never looked back. Nipping at his heels was Josh Pethel ’22, who carded a 37 that featured eight pars and a single bogey. Coming in third was Jason Jones ’24 who rebounded from a tough outing over the weekend with an impressive display of putting to card a 40. Kenneth Yonke ’22, Nick Barnes ’22, and Ethan Xin ’23 posted identical rounds of 43 for the fourth scoring tally.
"Argyle and Josh are now a combined +1 over their last 90 holes of golf," said Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith. "This is exactly the type of golf needed from the top two of our team, and it has been done under adverse conditions. The entire team is contributing with low scores, and each match it could be any of the top six that count for the team. This combination of depth and high end is the exact mix we needed heading into the gauntlet of tough outings we have remaining."
Mercersburg (5–0 in head to head matches) visits Woodberry Forest School Saturday, October 16, for a 12:30 p.m. match in Orange, VA.
