Golf Teams Take 4th at MAPL Championships
Mercersburg’s boys’ and girls’ golf teams both placed fourth in their respective Mid-Atlantic Prep League Golf Championships. Both events were held May 4, with the boys’ competition taking place at the Peddie Golf Club in Hightstown, NJ, and the girls’ event at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown, PA.
The boys’ competition featured a modified Ryder Cup format. Each competing school enters a trio of two-man teams for 18 holes; the front nine is alternate-shot, the back nine is best ball.
The Blue Storm’s Argyle Downes ’22 and Jason Jones ’24 shot 40 on the front nine and 35 on the back for a total of 75. Teammates Kenneth Yonke ’22 and Nick Barnes ’22 had an identical 40 on the front nine and 37 on the back for a 77, and Ethan Xin ’23 and Khoi Pham ’22 went 42-36 for a 78. (The day’s low score—a 69—came from Blair’s pairing of Dylan Zhang and Cooper Winegar.)
Mercersburg posted a 230 aggregate, one stroke ahead of Hill (231) and two shots better than host Peddie (232). Blair (213) won the team title with the lowest score in MAPL Championship history.
In the girls’ event, five individuals from each school played 18 holes. The Storm’s low round was turned in by Sihyeon Bae ’24, who shot 90. Amanda Xi ’25 was next with 102; Sandra Apfelroth ’22 turned in a 103, Plern Pibuldham ’23 shot 106, and Johanna Lee ’25 and Abby Yang ’25 finished with identical scores of 115. Mercersburg (401) was fourth, ahead of Lawrenceville. Blair won a playoff with Peddie after both tied at 332 after 18 holes.
Both Mercersburg squads travel to Northern Virginia to face host Bishop O’Connell High School Saturday, May 7. The matches tee off at noon.
