Golf Stays Perfect with Win over Potomac
Mercersburg’s golf team moved to 2-0 on the season with a six-stroke win over perennial Mid-Atlantic Conference powerhouse Potomac School (of McLean, VA) September 18 at Chambersburg Country Club. The Blue Storm edged the Panthers by a score of 414-420, with Josh Pethel ’22 firing a 77 over 18 holes to earn medalist honors.
The match featured eight golfers from each team while counting the top five scores from each. Both schools displayed some outstanding golf on the day while the course was presenting its usual sturdy challenge.
Argyle Downes ’23 was just a stroke behind Pethel with a 78, and Kenneth Yonke ’22 posted a fine 83 to round out the top three scorers for Mercersburg. Potomac’s top three finishers all carded identical 79s and tossed in an 88 and a 95 to round out the top five. The Blue Storm showed its depth with Nick Barnes ’22 rebounding from a shaky front nine to card a rock-solid 87 and Azian Subhani ’23 rounded out the scoring from the 8th spot on the team with a respectable 89.
“Potomac is a great golf program that is poised for an excellent season,” Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith said. “I’m thrilled to go toe to toe with them and this match was very much in the balance until the back end of the match had their scores counted. Our depth really helped us out today and illustrates the talent we have across the board in the program. We are gonna need to find a bit more consistency in the top six for our upcoming matches but we are off to a great start.”
Mercersburg gets a look at a different course in competition for the first time this fall when the Storm heads to Shepherdstown, WV for the Martinsburg High School Invitational Wednesday, September 22, at The Club at Cress Creek. The tournament tees off at 9 a.m.
