Mercersburg’s golf team placed first in a nine-team field at the rain-shortened Martinsburg High School Invitational September 22 at Cress Creek Country Club in Shepherdstown, WV.

The Blue Storm had three of the top five individual finishers, led by medalist Josh Pethel ’22 (4-over-par). Argyle Downes ’23 (5-over) was just one stroke behind in second place, and Kenneth Yonke ’22 (8-over) took fifth.

The weather did not cooperate and the entire round was played in rain from a drizzle to much heavier precipitation. When the course reached an unplayable stage, the horn sounded and golfers cleared the course. All groups completed at least 14 holes, and the decision was made to count each player’s first 14 holes and count the scores in relation to par.

Several Storm golfers were hoping the course could withstand just a bit longer, because as the horn sounded, a number of players were compiling tremendous rounds under the circumstances. Downes was looking at a short birdie putt on the 17th hole at +5. Pethel had a short par putt on his 16th hole to remain at +4.

Pethel took home medalist honors for the second match in a row. After Downes and Yonke, Nick Barnes (9-over) rounded out the individual honors with a seventh-place finish.

“We’re very proud of the team and how they persevered in these conditions,” said Mercersburg head coach Doug Smith. “To a person, they wanted to keep playing and didn't shy away from the challenge one bit. I am amazed that the boys were keeping blowups off the card—they were constantly getting out the umbrellas, putting on rain gear, taking off rain gear, changing gloves. There is so much outside of the normal routine on rain days that it takes focus to not get distracted. Just great play from the team.”
