The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania offers a tax-credit program that enables businesses to redirect their tax dollars to Mercersburg for financial aid in support of students from the state. The application process is easy, and the benefits to deserving students are transformational.

U.S. taxpayers who are at least 70 1/2 years of age, may make gifts to Mercersburg from an IRA without having to count those funds as part of your adjusted gross income. Consequently, you do not have to pay taxes on the gifted amount. This is particularly helpful if you do not itemize your deductions. Additionally, since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax. Distributions count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) if you are age 73. Your IRA administrator must distribute your gift directly to Mercersburg, and the individual maximum is $100,000 per calendar year.

Milestone reunions are when many alumni think about a special gift to recognize their time at Mercersburg. Most are class gifts to the Annual Fund but there are additional philanthropic opportunities to consider.

Every class has a class reunion goal and a participation goal. In addition, classes recognize overall giving. See where your class compares.

What’s most important is that you participate with a gift that is comfortable for you. We can discuss options for you to consider, or you can reach out to a member of your reunion committee.

Make your Gift

If you own appreciated stock or mutual funds, you can gift them to Mercersburg Academy. By doing so you can take a charitable deduction for an amount equal to the value of the stock on the day we receive it, and you avoid any capital gains tax that you would have paid had you sold the stock. In this way, the tax savings can be much more significant than with a gift of cash.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GIFTING STOCK

Example:
Joe has a 50th reunion in June and wants to make a special gift to honor that milestone and the special connections he’s reestablished with his classmates. He bought shares of IBM back in 1980 for about $16 per share. It now trades for about $135 per share. He makes a gift of $10,000 to the Annual Fund, larger than he ever thought possible, for shares that originally cost him less than $1,200. Additionally, he pays no capital gains because the shares were gifted to Mercersburg, and he receives a tax deduction for the full $10,000.
