Izzy Jones ’22

Mercersburg’s girls’ varsity tennis team dropped its first match of the season after three victories, falling 4-3 at the Hun School of Princeton September 18 in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League contest in Princeton, N.J.

Dayoung Kim ’23, Camille Smith ’22, and Izzy Jones ’22 all won singles matches for the Blue Storm (3-1, 2-1 MAPL), and Smith and M.C. Miro ’23 won their doubles match, but Hun took the doubles match and three singles matches to capture a 4-3 win.

In doubles action, the Blue Storm’s #3 match was the first off court, a convincing 8-2 victory for Miro and Smith. The #1 doubles match went to Hun, and the all-important doubles point was decided at #2, where the team of Kim and Jones fought valiantly, but fell in a tight 8-6 battle.

In singles action, Hun was strong in the #1-#3 matches, but Mercersburg was the better side #4-#6 with wins by Kim, Smith, and Jones, respectively.  Meanwhile, Hun captured clear wins at #1 and #3, leaving #2 Isabel Su ’23 on court with the team score knotted at 3-3.

After dropping the first set, Su fought back, using her consistent, counterpunching style to nab the second set and push the match to a deciding 10-point tiebreaker. With both teams and a handful of spectators looking on, Hun’s Sabina Wang pulled away, winning the tiebreaker 10-7, lifting Hun to the tightly contested 4-3 victory.

The Storm returns to action Tuesday, September 21, at home at the Smoyer Tennis Center against State College (4 p.m.).
